I'm an
agnostic, so
religion and
atheism both baffle me to some degree. Coming from a family that is fairly religious -- and steeped in the
standard holiday traditions, they've always celebrated
Easter.
This usually consists of my grandmother going to church (and perhaps dragging my grandfather along, who would rather be out mowing the yard or building cabinets or something . . . Anything . . .) and first thing in the morning, my brother and sister running about the house looking for those warming, smelly eggs that were left out overnight after being hidden.
Then everyone get's a massive basket of Easter candy (I may be agnostic, but damn some of this Easter stuff kicks ass!)
Then there's usually some sort of Easter dinner or supper at home or a restaurant. Some people (including myself as a child, as well as my brother and sister at one time) get bunnies for Easter. And the Easter Bunny is responsible for leaving the candy and hiding the eggs for the next morning.
So what I don't understand is if Easter is supposed to have something to do with Jesus and his death (I don't remember if Easter is when he was crucified or when he rose from the grave or came out of the hallow rock or whatever) -- but how do the two come together? Was Jesus reincarnated into a wascally wabbit?!
