In Tolkien's works a swamp (which plays no discernible part in the plot of either the Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit) featured on the maps in the books; in real life, an unremarkable village in the Yorkshire Wolds, on the A1079 just west of Great Driffield. The name is of Viking origin, probably meaning "field where a legal action was heard", but its history dates back far further; the site of a chariot burial of an Iron Age Celtic princess from around 400 BC was discovered in the village in the 1990s.
