(Molecular biology) An mRNA molecule which has been processed by RNA splicing to include a specific combination of exons which is different from the "normal" combination expressed by that gene. Human genes often have large numbers of alternative transcripts, often performing quite distinct functions - for instance, the human beta-tropomyosin gene is alternatively spliced to generate two distinct proteins in fibroblasts and skeletal muscle cells.
