As a kid in New York, I thought this meant stuff like the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean. Subsequent vacations to the coastal Carolinas taught me that it's a locally-popular form of 60's rhythm and blues that is suitable for shag dancing. No, "shag dancing" is not what you think.
