A phrase meaning dead. Not quite well and throughly dead, a little bit beyond mostly dead, and a smidgen better than totally dead. This phrase probably originated either from when wooden ships would sink, they might turn belly up before doing so; or perhaps it's because dead fish float belly-up. I can't really see it coming from the fact that 99% of all dead insects are flipped over on their backs. The world may never know.
