Unofficial economic activity which cannot be measured precisely as it avoids passing through offical accounts. Also known as a parallel economy. Such trade is not necessarily illegal, merely non-accountable in a statistical sense.

Not to be confused with a black market, where buyers and sellers trade illegally at a price higher than a legally imposed ceiling price. Violation of rationing and contraband controls can also be present in a black market.
