cult of orthogonality

In engineering, the fervent belief that the orthogonality of features should be pursued to the extreme. An argument against excessive orthogonality is that some combinations of features just don't make sense. The argument suggests that those combinations will confuse the novice user of the system and therefore should be made impossible to invoke (thereby violating the principle of orthogonality).
