Arabic word meaning literally to cover. The normal English translation is "infidelity". One who is lost in kufr is a kaffir (unbeliever,infidel). It is a very serious matter to call someone a kaffir, as the Prophet (SAW) is reported to have said that if a Muslim calls another Muslim a kaffir, one of them is. Pronounced "koo'fer".
