In chess the minor pieces are the bishop and the knight. They are both given a value of 3 though many people believe that a knight should get 3 and bishop 3 and 1/4. In chess you normally move out your minor pieces before taking out your queen and rook. They are also refered to as the minor pieces because on their own with just a king they are unable to force a checkmate.
