Monofilaments are strands of matter one atom wide. They function as monomolecular blades, if they are strong enough to hold together when force is applied. This type of monofilaments cannot be made with modern technology.

Another definition is a single linear strand of a synthetic polymer (such as nylon). These will not function as monomolecular blades.
