| An old chestnut that started in 1981 is the "Equation Analysis Test" from GAMES Magazine (May/June 1981 issue). This was a set of 24 equations of the form "76 = T. that L. the B. P." where you have to figure out the phrase that matches the number and initials (trombones that led the big parade).
GAMES published 2 follow-up sets of equations within the next two years (May/June 1982; November 1982), and some occasional variations after that (the first was Proverb Analysis Test; March 1983), but they noted some strange things occurring. People copied the original puzzle and passed it around. A lot. Copied it over and over; lots of third and fourth generation copies were circulating, sometimes with errors or new puzzles added. This was before the internet was accessible to many people outside universities, and not even to the general student populations there, so most of this meant copying in hardcopy form. By the time GAMES printed the follow-up sets, they said they'd received their own original puzzle submitted as original work several times.
Anyway, the puzzles continued to circulate, and as the internet grew, the puzzle grew onto the internet. It became one of the most commonly repeated puzzles in the rec.puzzles newsgroup on Usenet, and certainly the one with the most variations. Often bits and pieces of the original three sets of equations were mixed with a variety of puzzles created by unknown other people. Sometimes the added puzzles were of comparable quality to the ones printed in GAMES; other times they really broke the rules, or depended on things too obscure for even the rec.puzzlers to figure out.
