These come from the second section of
Gravity's Rainbow, by
Thomas Pynchon. The section, called
Un Perm' au Casino Hermann Goering (a
soldier on leave at the
Hermann Goering casino) shifts from an endless
hedonistic chaotic party at a
French resort into a world of
manipulation and
fear. The main
character,
Theodore Slothrop has all of his
identification papers stolen and is passed around from one shady character to another. As he decends into abject
paranoia, he learns the lessons of each of these
proverbs.
