Pure-castile soap is used to designate a soap as being vegetable oil-based (as opposed to tallow-based) without a blend of synthetic detergents. Pure-castile soaps are more ecologically sound than synthetic soaps becuase they are biodegradable. The name "pure-castile" is derived from the fact that the Castile region of Spain was once famous for its olive oil-based soaps.
