A push rod is a slender shaft of hardend metal, often steel, that connects the rocker arm to the cam lifter. It is a part of the valve train in a push rod based engine. Push rods normally run parallel to the cylinder. Push rods are not used in the now ubiquitious overhead camshaft engine (OHC, DOHC).
