Sash Windows are a hole in a wall which is filled by a heavy wooden frame which is counterbalanced by weights allowing minimal effort in order to open and close the window itself.

Sash windows serve a double purpose of allowing the occupants of the room to see out, whilst allowing the wind and rain in.

Now deprecated in favour of cheaper casement windows or the considerably more expensive/effective double glazing.
