Given by grocery stores to customers as a tool to help build profiling databases. The customer may then use the card to trade personal information for a discount on their groceries.

News Item (Think it was on MarketPlace in 98 or 99)

Some guy (anyone know his name?) slipped and hurt himself at Food Lion, and was going to sue because this was pretty well their fault, and I guess he hurt himself fairly badly. (Can anyone confirm?)

But the point is, while the ambulance whisked him off to the emergency room, the corporate lawyers looked up his purchase habits, and threatened to bring up in court how much alcohol he buys.
