Some Summer's They Drop like Flies is a beautiful track from the album Whatever You Love You Are, 2000, by Australian band The Dirty Three. This past month, which each passing day the title of the song seemed to refer to the summer of 2007, more and more, with a growing list of deaths of influential figures in modern cinema and popular music:
30th July: was indeed a dark day in the history of European cinema when two of its most influential directors died
- Revered Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, commonly regarded as one of the most influential directors in modern cinema died peacefully in his sleep.
- Revered Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni, who was one of the most important directors in Italian cinema history, bringing Italian cinema from the post-war narratives of neorealism, into the often disjointed narrative of modern cinema, also died on this date.
- 4th August: American country singer, songwriter and producer Lee Hazlewood lost his battle with cancer, at 78 years of age. Hazlewood was most famous for his collaborations with rock guitarist Duane Eddy during the late 1950s, and also with Nancy Sinatra in the 1960s, and for writing such songs as These Boots Are Made For Walkin', and Some Velvet Morning.
- 10th August: Anthony Wilson, co-founder of Factory Records, died of a heart attack. Tony was well-known for discovering and signing such bands as Joy Division, New Order and Happy Mondays. Tony was also the founder of Manchester's infamous Hacienda nightclub. The Hacienda & Factory Records were what created a vibrant music and clubbing scene in Manchester in the late 1980s, earning the city the title "Madchester" and the title "Mr. Manchester" for himself. Tony's life story was the subject of Michael Winterbottom's film 24 Hour Party People, 2002.
