A point at which the mRNA derived from a coding sequence of DNA during transcription is cut and a length removed. The regions removed from the RNA are known as introns, with the remaining sections (which go on to be translated into protein) being termed exons. Some splice sites are only cut depending on other factors, allowing different patterns of splicing from a single coding region to produce different proteins.
