A stock epithet is a literary device most often found in classical epic poems (i.e. the works of Homer). A stock epithet is used to reintroduce a character or other object by using a phrase or two repeatedly when introducing it into a scene.

For example, in The Odyssey Homer repeatedly refers to Athena as "gray-eyed Athena", or the sea as the "wine dark sea".
