Being strung up in a cave involves being attached to the rope and possibly other things whilst halfway up a pitch such that you can't disentangle yourself without external assistance.

Often a situation where you seem to be strung up can be avoided by applying some ingenuity to the situation, but this is often difficult when you are suspended up to 100m above the ground.
