A short staff of wood that comes from the legendary ugly tree. The wood of the ugly tree is aparently able to bestow uglyness upon a being. Hence, if you fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch, you'd be pretty ugly. In a smaller form, being beaten with the ugly stick just makes you a little bit ugly.
