urban metabolism

A reality that becomes apparent only when one is simultaneously in the right frame of mind and at a relatively high vantage point over a long period of time in an urban area. Every morning and evening I get on the bus, put on my headphones, and make my commute over the elevated expressway that winds through the heart of my city. A window seat is a must for this particular experience, as are the headphones that filter out the ambient noise and the intrusive chatter. Every day I settle into my seat and I begin to absorb the world that flashes by my window...

A rainbow of smoking metallic machines flowing through asphalt arteries with clockwork precision, funneling into infinitely branching concrete capillaries, nourishing bright glass cells with vitamin Humanity.

Towering limbs sweeping overhead, seas of yellow construction undulating below, steel rising, unlikely materials fusing, simultaneous conflict and harmony, physical extension of the organism.

Industrial production billowing, flowing resources circulating, engine of civilization, inhaling and exhaling, turning and churning, feeding and poisoning.

Intricate fractal nature forgotten, delicate ecosystem scorned, blue heavens praised, eternal indecision and contradiction, the cycle continues.

Electromagnetic waves, coded signals, digital bits diffusing through an optical, aetherial, cuprous web, achieving omnidirectional permeation, universal connectivity and communication, a distributed nervous system.

Interacting individuals in the emergent meta-machine, peaks and valleys, sinusoidal roller coaster, invisible elbow, social organization on the edge of chaos, extra-temporal osmosis of living art and culture.

Machines controlling machines controlling machines controlling machines controlling machines 1 0 1 0 1 0, metasystem transitions, digital darwinism, genetic algorithms, cybernetic autoevolution.

Technicolor information bombardment, memetic plague, the medium is the message, mediated reality, enhanced sensory perception, biological-computational symbiosis.

Systems of systems, recursive fabric of relations, chaotic dynamics, holographic tapestry... pulsating, producing, digesting...
