A method of composition popularized by John Cage in which dicisions about which instruments will play when, etc, are determined by some "non-intentional" method. Some methods divised include:

• A roll of dice
• selection from a deck of a cards
• consulting the I Ching
• Tarot cards
• flip a coin

Used mostly in music, but also in visual art, text and Choreography.
