Substance added to a plastic (e.g. PVC) to make it softer and more flexible. Cheap PVC film will "sweat" plasticizer, making it difficult to coat with adhesive, ink, or other coatings. "New car smell" is often at least partially the smell of plasticizer baking out of the plastic dashboard and pleather seats.
