Neither punk, nor new wave, these unrelated (and usually uncommercial) bands used the market space opened up by punk's notoriety to get signed by indie labels, and occasionally by majors. Cabaret Voltaire, Magazine, Gang of Four, The Pop Group, Bauhaus, XTC... Some of the bands, and various individuals, are still at it: Barry Adamson, Sara Lee, Neneh Cherry, for instance; some have even become music-industry suits, though they now could use a hit from the clue bong.
