Cruithne son of Cinge was the legendary father of the Picts, who reigned for a hundred years, whose seven sons divided the land into seven parts, according to the introduction to the Pictish Chronicle.

The seven sons are thought to represent the seven tribes or clans whose territories lay north of the Firth of Forth and who united to form the Pictish nation as follows;
