Duet from
Mozart's
opera Don Giovanni, sung by the Don (
baritone) and Zerlina (
soprano).
Don Giovanni invites the peasant to abandon her wedding with Masetto, currently in progress, and leave with him instead. ("There, we will join hands; There you will say "yes" to me.") She is
skeptical of his good intentions, but is about to succumb when Donna Elvra (another of Don GIovanni's
conquests) intervenes.
Some of Zerlina's lines from the duet -- and its theme of seduction and resistance -- make an appearance in James Joyce's Ulysses, in Bloom's thoughts in Hades and again in Molly Bloom's concluding monologue.
