Serving Chicago, Kansas City, Albuquerque, Los Angeles, and intermediate points

Amtrak train numbers: 3 and 4

Predecessor railroad train numbers: None

In 1974, the Santa Fe Railway felt that the service Amtrak was providing on their train between Chicago and Los Angeles was no longer worthy of the name Super Chief, and withdrew permission for Amtrak to use their registered trademark. Amtrak renamed the train Southwest Limited.

Over the next 10 years, thanks mainly to the new Superliner equipment coming along in the early 1980s and replacing old castoff equipment that had come from a variety of railroads nationwide, Amtrak managed to bring the Southwest Limited's service up to acceptable levels. The Santa Fe let Amtrak use their "Chief" trademark again, and the train became the Southwest Chief with the October 28, 1984 timetable.
