This is, of course, the
cute commercial where a boy leads the lost
tourists through the
desert to the
ATM machine so they can
withdraw money and get home. More importantly, however, it nearly started an
international incident in my
high school
We had a bunch of
French (who else?)
exchange students stay with us in 10th grade. A few of them saw the commercial and were absolutely
indignant. They came into
school the next day hopping
mad, threatening to
kill whoever would make such a sick
joke at the expense of the
French.
Apparently, they had misheard "ATM" for "N.T.M.", which is the
abbreviation for the French
curse of "Nique Ta Mere" (
spelling probably incorrect). That, in turn,
translates to
"Fuck your mother!"
