777 is the name used in the US by ambient recording artists System 7. Presumably, the name "System 7" was trademarked by Apple Computer, who gave the group legal hassles when they wanted to release records in North America.

I may be totally wrong in my guess of the reason for the name change. All I know is that the All-Music Guide says that legal trouble were the reason.
