The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) grew from 400,000 members in 1960 to 33 million in 1993. This represents the powerful demographic shift being caused by the baby boom. This huge number of new retirees threatens the existing pension systems of the first world as well as the very concept of retirement. According to The Economist, the economies of the 21st century will have to make much better use of older employees: offering wide opportunities for contract and consulting work. After the Catholic Church, the AARP is now the largest private organization in the world.
