Founded in 1858 by John Butterfield who also created American Express, with the original intention of carrying United States mail at a federal budget of $595,000.

The Butterfield Stage stretched more than 2,700 miles, beginning at St. Louis and ending in San Francisco. Along the way it passed through El Paso, Texas, Tucson, Arizona, and Los Angeles. During its existance t had 100 coaches, 800 workers and 1,500 horses. It folded operation in 1861.
