I see suggestions for new categories come up all the time in the Chatterbox. I am noding here as much to have something to point category-suggesters to as to push my own ideas.
The Gods have stated that categories are fixed: What good would new categories do anyway?
Now, I happen to think that new, completely separate, categories are surely a Bad Thing. Every writeup I can think of falls into one of (
Person), (
Place), or (
Thing)
1. I suppose (
definition)s and (
idea)s are convenient categories to have since there are so many of em.
But: What about a
hierarchical system of categories?
Categories could be created by Gods or E2ers of an appropriate level, and made sub-categories of one of the root categories, or an existing sub-category.
Definition and
idea would suddenly become sub-categories of
Thing.
There could be (
story) under (
thing) and (
rant) under (
idea).
I see a big potential problem: Most sub-categories would be subsued under (
thing).
And again, what would you do with the new categories, once you had them? (Sort writeups by category, perhaps? I don't know.)
1I was taught in grade school that "quality" was a completely separate category of noun (e.g.
happiness,
red,
quality). <irony>Quality nodes are few and far between, however.</irony>
