GCC, formerly the GNU C Compiler, has been retroactively renamed the GNU Compiler Collection. The new name is more appropriate now that GCC supports many more languages than just C.

As of version 3.0, the following languages are supported:

• C - C is still supported, of course
• C++ - a very standards conforming C++ compiler
• Objective-C - the language behind MacOS X Cocoa
• Fortran - the Fortran 77 standard is supported
• Java - gcc can compile Java into standard Java bytecode or native executables

In addition the following language frontends are available or in development, but are not included in the GCC source tree:

• Chill - a specialized telecom language
• Ada
• Pascal
• COBOL
• Fortran95
• Modula-2
