Refers to the relaxed electronic state of a molecule, or the lowest energy occupied molecular orbital configuration. In contrast to the excited state, the ground state does not emit photons or relax to a lower electronic level. It may have vibrational sublevels. The nature of the ground state can be probed by studying a molecule's absorption spectrum.
