James Branch Cabell is one of the forerunners of what we know know as the genre of fantasy, long long ago before there was J.R.R. Tolkien and the plural of dwarf was suddenly spelt dwarves.
He become notorious for his novel Jurgen which, as so many other fine reads, was blacklisted because of its then pornographic content.
Many of J.B. Cabell's books take place in the fictional country Poictesme.
