Country singer, born in Houston, Texas on August 21, 1938. He formed the group The First Edition in 1967, and left the group to go solo in 1973.

He has had many top 10 hits on the pop and country charts. He is probably best known for "The Gambler" and the Lionel Richie-penned "Lady."
