A small community in North-eastern Thailand (Issan). Located to the south of Udon Thani. This small town's economy is solely based upon agriculture and local trading. The main staple crops include sugar cane and rice. Located in the area are two factories which process the local sugar cane into sugar.
Kumphawapi is made up of several villages. Including Huay Kun, Pandon (Muanggao old city), Kumphawapi (Muangmai new city).
Located on the main throughway, is a park. The park can be referred to as "Suan Ling" or "Suan Suk Paap". The prior translates as "Monkey Park", the former "Fitness Park". The park is home to a large monkey population. Thailand used to contain a high population of monkeys, but in the past thirty years deforestation has caused the monkey population to literally go extinct. There are a few other monkey parks within Thailand. The park as you have guessed by now, is a place where locals go to stay fit, by jogging and participating in aerobic activities.
There are several schools within the area. Rong Rian Kumphawapi (or Kumphawapi Academic Centre), is a well known school in the area. Currently there's already one vocational college, and another currently under construction.
*Note on pronunciation, the name Kumphawapi was transcribed by the French. Who did a terrible job. Is pronounced more like Gumpawapi.
