The all-time cheesy pickup line. It is disdainful, unimaginative, and ridiculous. But it actually has a flip side. Sure, the man who utters it can be a horny asshole taking the girl he's addressing for a slut, but he could just be a funny, witty, sensitive, dateable guy expressing disdain towards the inherent fallacy and hypocrisy of situations where men try to pick up women.
Michael Cunningham, a psychology professor at the University of Louisville sent graduate students out to bars in the 80's to do field research and collect data on what pickup lines work best. Number one was, "I feel a little embarrassed about this, but I'd like to meet you." The runner-up line was "What do you think of the band?," and a close third was my personal favourite, "Hi!"
Despite my before-mentioned dislike of elaborate pickup lines I sometimes resort to this one as a way to differentiate girls with a sense of humour and those without.
I get more slaps in the face than laughs. |
