Pieter Zeeman, Dutch physicist, b. 1865, d. 1943. Schooled at Leyden University, with Lorentz as one of his mentors. Became Lorentz's assistant in 1890. Obtained his Ph. D. in 1893. Discovered the Zeeman Effect (the splitting of spectral lines by magnetic fields). Research areas generally included optical phenomena, including the effects of magnetic fields on light radiation. Shared the 1902 Nobel Prize with Hendrik A. Lorentz
