46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
46:2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
46:3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
46:4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.
46:5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.
46:6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
46:7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
46:8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.
46:9 He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.
46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
46:11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

Everything King James Bible:Psalms

(idea) by DJuxtaposition (10.5 mon) (print)   ?   (I like it!) Mon Jan 22 2001 at 16:55:26

I'm not sure what happenned in this translation, but there's an extra word in it towards the end, that's all. The King James Bible that I'd guess was written when Shakespeare was about 46 years old, had a slightly different setup. That, or I can't count. A person recently pointed this out to me:

If you count 46 words from the beginning of this verse, you'll hit the word 'shake'
If you count 46 back, although it was 47 in this (which is why I honestly think there's an extra word in it), you come across the word 'spear'.

It'd be a comfort to know that one of the greatest writers to exist had had his chance to leave his name hidden in a holy text, and the thought is kinda creepy too. You know, what if everyone who translated verses felt the need to alter something to put their name in it upside down and backwards in all caps? Like, what if a guy with the initials GGG thought it'd be r33t to put his initials as 666, the mark of the devil? Nevermind, let's just be glad William Shakespeare didn't put subliminal ads for his plays in the ol' bible.

Or did he?

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Whole Bible
back to: Psalms
Book: Psalms
Chapter: 46

Overview:
Confidence in God. (1-5) An exhortation to behold it. (6-11)

1-5 This psalm encourages to Hope and trust in God; in his
power and Providence, and his gracious presence with his Church
in the worst of times. We may apply it to spiritual enemies, and
the encouragement we have that, through Christ, we shall be
conquerors over them. He is a Help, a present Help, a Help
found, one whom we have found to be So; a Help at Hand, one that
is always near; we cannot desire a better, nor shall we ever
find the like in any Creature. Let those be troubled at the
troubling of the waters, who build their confidence On a
floating foundation; but let not those be alarmed who are led to
the Rock, and there find firm footing. Here is joy to the
Church, even in sorrowful times. The River alludes to the graces
and consolations of the Holy Spirit, which flow through every
part of the Church, and through God's sacred ordinances,
gladdening the Heart of every believer. It is promised that the
Church shall not be moved. If God be in our hearts, By his Word
dwelling richly in us, we shall be established, we shall be
helped; let us trust and not be afraid.

6-11 Come and see the effects of desolating judgments, and
stand in awe of God. This shows the perfect security of the
Church, and is an Assurance of lasting peace. Let us pray for
the speedy approach of these glorious days, and in silent
submission let us Worship and trust in our almighty Sovereign.
Let all believers triumph in this, that the Lord of hosts, the
God of Jacob, has been, is, and will be with us; and will be our
Refuge. Mark this, take the comfort, and say, If God be for us,
who can be against us? With this, through Life and in Death, let
us answer every fear.
