The armed forces of the USSR. The Bolsheviks established the Red Army after the October Revolution of 1917, to defend their new regime against counter-revolutionary forces. Under the leadership of Leon Trotsky, the soviet troops won the ensuing civil war, routing the disorganised and disunited White Russians, who were made up of Tsarists as well as supporters of Kerensky's February Revolution.
