Reeves Gabrels

Born in Staten Island, New York, Reeves Gabrels grew up to be a much revered guitar and studio virtuoso.

"Lead Guitarist Reeves Gabrels is a show just by himself. His guitar work - alternately blues and power rock, alternately blistering and poetic - reminds of Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck." Joe Konz - The Indianapolis Star

Although Reeves has spanned the spectrum of guest appearances (Natalie Imbruglia, "Torn" to The Rolling Stones, "Out of Control"), he is known mostly for his work with David Bowie.

"It's not to embarrass him, but of any of the guitar players I've ever worked with, without doubt, Reeves is the most musically accomplished. He's an extraordinary musician, absolutely extraordinary." David Bowie - Melody Maker Magazine

Reeves has worked with Bowie since 1979's Lodger, although it was not until Bowie's 1989 foray-into-metal pet project Tin Machine, where he finally came into the spotlight. Reeves' complex guitar work gave the band its signature sound.

"I hope I am not overstating the case, but Reeves Gabrels is the Master of the Universe. No other guitarist (Vai, Satriani, Eric Johnson and Steve Morse included) so consistently challenges, surprises, and stimulates me as this renegade six-stringer." Bill Milkowski - Guitar World

After Tin Machine disbanded in 1993, Reeves went on to be David Bowie's main collaborator. He produced, co-wrote, and played on Bowie's Black Tie White Noise (1993), Outside (1995), Earthling (1997), and hours... (1999). Reeves is credited for crafting Bowie's more electronic sound, commonly heard today.

"Of all the guitarists who use digital gear, why is it that only Reeves Gabrels seems to explore the quirky, idiomatic aspects of the technology? Radical harmonization's, reckless pitch-shifting, even harsh glitching are all fodder for the guitarist's sonic collages. And who else leaps so nimbly from fleet-fingered solos to near spastic chordal belches. Gabrels is the egghead's shredder, a man with enough technique to melt brains and enough brains to forget about technique." Joe Gore - Guitar Player Magazine

Reeves has also crafted soundtracks for the Playstation game Omikron: The Nomad Soul, and the computer RPG Deus Ex. Along with soundtracks, Reeves has been busy releasing his solo work. In 1995 he released Sacred Squall of Now. Sacred Squall... includes collaborations with such artists as Gary Oldman (yes, the actor), David Bowie, and Jeffrey Gaines. In 1999 he released Ulysses. However, a year prior, he released the album free to the world through web-music giant, mp3.com. Ulysses also includes some stellar guest appearances by Frank Black, David Bowie, and Dave Grohl.
