The Rhode Island School for the Deaf was established soon after an 1836 report on the education level of deaf persons in the state. 35 of the 51 deaf Rhode Islanders at the time were completely uneducated, and the majority were homeless.

The school offers elementary school, middle school, and high school programs, along with mainstreaming programs to train children to interact with hearing persons. Also available are courses in American Sign Language

RI Deaf has varsity soccer, basketball, track, and cheerleading programs, which compete with both deaf and hearing schools.
