| 1962 book by Rachel Carson examining the impact of pesticides and other poisons in the environment, specifically the impact of DDT on the reproduction of birds. DDT, an insecticide, travels through the food chain and builds up the the bodies of birds, where it causes a weaking of egg shells. The title refers to the possibility of poisons causing massive extiction in the bird popultion. The book was chosen as the Modern Library Association's 5th best non-fiction book, and is considered a seminal work in the environmental movement. |
