The name given to the political situation in Northern Ireland. It refers to the terrorism in the country, the struggle for a United Ireland by one side, and to remain a part of the United Kingdom by the other. It is the conflict between Unionism and Republicanism.
The Troubles have meant that many people, civilians, paramilitaries, members of the armed forces and RUC, have lost their lives.
It is hoped that devolution and the creation of a Northern Ireland Assembly will ease the situation. However, the Assembly has been stopped due to the current situation.
Even in this time of supposed peace, people are still being killed. |
