In relation to DVD subtitles, means to be a part of the MPEG 2 video, and not stored as a seperate subtitle track. Annoying because subtitle tracks are losslessly compressed, so are likely to look better; they ristrict the DVD to one language of subtitle; and if the viewer understands the language the audio is in, they can't turn off the subtitles.
