  1. A bodily injury resulting from a blow with a blunt object. This causes damage to subcutaneous tissue and the associated blood vessels, and an escape of blood. The visible result is black, purple, yellow, and/or blue discoloration of the skin, swelling, and painful tenderness in the affected areas. Appropriate treatment is ice and possibly aspirin or ibuprofin to reduce swelling.
  2. A severe concussion of the brain, resulting in damage to brain tissue and blood vessels. May cause no end of trouble, generally causing unconsciousness and other potentially permanent brain damage.
