If you have a mathematical function in more than one dimensions, for example f(x,y,z), and you want to know what is the rate of change of this function in a direction specified by a vector, for example a, you get it by taking the dot product (nabla f(x,y,z)) . a, where nabla means the gradient. This is a directional derivative.
