In football, at the end of a cup match if neither team is winning, the game goes into extra time. This is a 30-minute period of further play, divided into two 15-minute halves separated by a break of about a minute. Some points to note:

The away goals rule is usually used after 90 minutes in preference to extra time.
Extra time increasingly uses the concept of the "golden goal", in which the first team to score wins the game there and then. This was used in the 2002 World Cup, but there are rumours that it is going to be dropped, and replaced by a system in which the team winning after the first half of extra-time (if any) wins the match.
If there is still no winner after extra time, the match is decided by a penalty shootout.
Extra time is not the same thing as injury time, which is simply an extension of normal play.
